In a lovely full calf binding. Adorned with maps indicating various boundaries. This work is from the correspondence of Sir George Cathcart, the Governor of the Cape. He became Governor in 1852 and upon reaching his post left for King William's Town to take command of the army. These correspondences are taken from the Xhosa Wars, also known as the Cape Frontier Wars or Africa's 100 Years War. It follow's Cathcart's mission for peace to the Colony. This work has a full account of the Kaffir war with Sandilli, and Cathcart's military maneuvers to bring peace. There are particulars of the war with Moshesh and further information regarding Basutoland and the Orange River Sovereignty. In addition to this there are a selection of private and official letters on South African matters in general. Collated, complete with seven plates, five folding. Gift inscription to the recto of front endpaper 'Reginald Hardy With the Best Wishes of R C Trollope Eton Election 1866&apos. A lovely example of this work, which forms a contemporary source of the Xhosa Wars from a British general's perspective. In a full calf binding with gilt stamping to the spine. Externally, smart, with just some fading to the leather at the spine. Light rubbing to the joints with small cracks to the head and tail, resulting in the hinges being strained but firm. Gift inscription to the recto of front endpaper, 'Reginald Hardy With the Best Wishes of R C Trollope&apos. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright.
