O'Neil to the front pastedown and also to the reverse of the frontispiece. Written by Thomas J. Hutchinson the British explorer, surgeon and travel writer of the 19th century. Many of his works relate to his travels in Africa. This particular works presents the author's own observations of numerous tribes from Senegal to Gaboon, collected over 10 years of travel in the continent. Thomas H. Hutchinson defends the work in the preface having been accused to having presented in this volume 'a less favourable portraiture of the African character' than in his other works. He states: 'I shall only advance the plea of never having set forth anything in my description of these people but the naked and unadorned truth as it stood before me&apos. Indeed this work reflects many of the view held by 19th century Europeans on the continent of Africa, whilst offering an insight the history of British exploration. Lightly bumped to the head and tail of the spine and also to the extremities. Rubbing to the spine and boards, with a small amount of loss to the gilt lettering. Light spots to the fore edge. Light age toning and occasional spots to the front and rear endpapers. Name stamp to the front pastedown and also to the reverse of the frontispiece. Internally generally firmly bound, with the binding strained in places. Pages are generally bright and clean, with the occasional handling mark. Light marks also to the frontispiece. Good .
