A fascinating biography of William Penn, the Quaker founder of the Province of Pennsylvania; by the renowned English abolitionist and author Thomas Clarkson. A 'New Edition' copy, with a preface by W. E. Foster, writing in response to 'the charges made by Mr. Macaulay, in his "History of England". Featuring an engraving of 'William Penn's Treaty with the Indians', a folding map of Pennsylvania, and a folding plan of the city of Philadelphia ('engraved expressly for Bradshaw and Blacklock's Edition' of the work), as called for on the title page of this edition. In the original cloth binding, with blind stamped design to boards, and gilt embellishment to the boards and spine. Externally worn, with slight bumping to extremities and head and tail of spine and the odd faint small mark to boards. Small split to head of front joint, with cloth to head of spine partially lifting. Hinges failed with backstrip detached from textblock. Internally firmly bound. Pages age toned, but bright and clean. The odd spot to the occasional page, heavier to first and last few pages. Good . Ill.: Various. Good .
