This work was commissioned as part of an extensive survey of monuments throughout England by the government advisory body, 'The Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England&apos. First established in 1908, the commission created inventories on a county-by-county basis, publishing around forty volumes over the next seventy years on notable buildings and monuments of archaeological, architectural and historical importance. Profusely illustrated throughout with copious black and white in-text sketches and plans, forty one photographic plates, and two folding maps (one of which is coloured). 'Second Thousand&apos. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with black stamped title to front board and spine. Externally excellent, with minor shelfwear to extremities and head and tail of spine. The odd small mark to boards, and small ink mark to upper extremity of rear board. Light scattered spots to endpapers. Prior owner's ink inscription to front free-endpaper. Internally firmly bound.
