His mother, Jane Elizabeth Cook, was also an artist, who inspired Theodore in his youth to travel into Europe. His travels provided him with the passion and information for this book, which looks at the great houses of France. Most of the photographs in this book are by Frederick Evans. Evans primarily photographed architecture, especially cathedrals. He used the plantnotype technique for his photography, though as it was too expensive, was forced to use cheaper alternatives. Before retiring in 1915, he had become widely regarded as the greatest architectural photographer of his era. With an introduction by W. H. Ward. Illustrated profusely throughout. Undated, dated using Copac from a copy held at the British Library. In the original publisher's half cloth binding with paper to the boards. Externally, smart. Light discolouration and marking to the boards and spine. A little bumping to the extremities. Some spots to the fore edge. Stamp to the bottom edge, 'V. J. J.
