This work discusses the beautiful great houses in France, such as Mont St. Michel, Pierrefonds, Chateau Gaillard, Loches, Langeais, Montreuil-Bellay, and many more. Theodore Cook was a British writer and art critic, known for publishing various books about art, He was also an avid athlete, being the captain of the football and rowing teams at Radley College, and founding the Oxford University Fencing Club in 1891. His mother, Jane Elizabeth Cook, was also an artist, who inspired Theodore in his youth to travel into Europe. His travels provided him with the passion and information for this book, which looks at the great houses of France. Most of the photographs in this book are by Frederick Evans. Evans primarily photographed architecture, especially cathedrals. He used the plantnotype technique for his photography, though as it was too expensive, was forced to use cheaper alternatives. Before retiring in 1915, he had become widely regarded as the greatest architectural photographer of his era. With an introduction by W. H. Ward. Illustrated profusely throughout. Undated, dated using Copac from a copy held at the British Library. In the original publisher's half cloth binding with paper to the boards. Externally, smart. Light discolouration and marking to the boards and spine. A little bumping to the extremities. Some spots to the fore edge. Stamp to the bottom edge, 'V. J. J. Prince, 'Brunella', Flood St. Stoke Gabriel, Totnes, Devon&apos. Label to the rear pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Very Good Indeed . Ill.: Frederick H. Evans.
