Two volumes bound in one. In the full read cloth binding, with a gilt title to the spine. Two dramatic works dating from the 18th century, with 'The Harrowing of Hell' being a later 19th century reprint of this work. 'The Harrowing of Hell. A Miracle Play. Printed From The Auchinleck Manuscript', c1835 (Dated from the introduction). Printed from The Auchinleck Manuscript, a large illuminated manuscript which is held in the National Library of Scotland. 'The Harrowing of Hell' tells the story of Jesus descending into Hell to release Satan's prisoners, with a particular focus on Adam and Eve from the Book of Genesis. 'Pasquin. A Dramatick Satire on the Times: Being The Rehearsal of Two Plays, viz. A Comedy call'd, The Election; And a Tragedy call'd, The Life and Death if Common-Sense. As it is Acted at the Theatre in the Hay-Market.', 1740. This dramatic work was one that popularised Henry Fielding as a playwright. Fielding was a novelist and dramatist of the 18th century who is perhaps best remembered for his novel 'Tom Jones&apos. A unusual collection of plays, bound together by a previous owner. The early work 'Pasquin' is more heavily age toned, than ''The Harrowing of Hell' as to be expected. In a full cloth binding. Externally smart, with minor rubbing to the spine and extremities. Offsetting to the front and rear endpapers. Internally firmly bound. Pages are generally clean, with the earlier play slightly age toned, as to be expected. Several pencil annotations.
