Volume X of the Art Union Monthly Journal. 'The Art Journal' was a monthly Victorian art journal, which was founded in 1839. The journal was known for its articles and portrays of the fine arts, and the early editions of the journal were strongly supportive of The Clique and attacked the Pre-Raphaelites. Edited by Samuel Carter Hall. Hall was a Victorian journalist who is best known for editing this journal. With an illustrated title page, thirty-four plates, and numerous in-text engravings. With four plates from another works loosely inserted; 'View of Shevagurry From the Top of Ramgaree', 'View of the Burial Ground at Bangalore', 'East View of Bangalore with the Cypress Garden', and 'North View of Seringapatam&apos. Bookplate to the front pastedown, 'Lt Colonel Philip Mair, Bognor, Sussex&apos. Collated, incomplete, as lacking the frontispiece of Prince Albert, and the plate facing page 52 'Mercury and Pandora&apos. In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, sound. Some light rubbing to the boards and spine. A little bumping to the head and tail of the spine. Lacking the spine label. Crack to the tail of the front joint. Hinges are starting but firm. Bookplate to the front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with some scattered spots, mostly to the plates. Good . Ill.: Various. Good .
