Aubrey Vincent Beardsley was a renowned English illustrator best known for his grotesque, decadent, and often erotic drawings in black ink that appeared in such notable works as Oscar Wilde's 'Salome', and the 1896 edition of Pope's 'The Rape of the Lock&apos. Due to his infamous erotic illustrations Beardsley was the most controversial artist of the Art Nouveau era, and significantly contributed to the movement before his tragically early death from tuberculosis. This work contains one hundred and fifty seven plates, including a portrait frontispiece of Beardsley with a facsimile of his signature. With a fascinating biography of Beardsley by the renowned journalist, critic and art historian Henry Currie Marillier. This copy is a second reprint of the first edition, originally published in March 1899. This copy also features a Publisher's Note, detailing the 'considerable rearrangement of the plates' in this edition; with additional plates transferred to this volume from the 'Later Work' (of Beardsley) in order to maintain a 'proper chronological sequence&apos. Ours is lacking the original dustwrapper, as usual. In the publisher's original cloth binding, featuring Aubrey's signature from the reverse cover of "Salome" to the rear board. Externally very smart, with slight bumping to extremities and head and tail of spine. Fading to spine, as usual with this colour binding. Front hinge split and strained after half title page.
