John Cunningham - The Poetical Works of John Cunningham the Poetical Works of William Falconer the Poetical Works of Thomas Day

Title: The Poetical Works of John Cunningham the Poetical Works of William Falconer the Poetical Works of Thomas Day
Description: London, Printed at the Stanhope Press, 1805. Leather. Three volumes of collected poetical works bound in one volume, containing the works of John Cunningham, William Falconer, and Thomas Day. These poetical works were collated by the notable English antiquary, bibliographer, and literary editor Thomas Park. With a charming engraved black and white frontispiece plate to each volume. John Cunningham was a Dublin born playwright, poet and actor, renowned for his simple descriptions of natural scenery in his pastorals. His most popular works include 'On the Forwardness of Spring', 'Ode for the Birth-day of the King of Prussia', and 'Fortune: An Apologue', to name a few. William Falconer was a Scottish epic poet concerned mainly with life at sea. Whilst he also compiled a dictionary of marine matters, Falconer was best known for the poem, 'The Shipwreck', that gained for him the patronage of the Duke of York, through whose influence he obtained the position of purser on various warships. Falconer was well positioned and experienced to write about the experience of a shipwreck as a sailor who had regular experience with storm-tossed vessels. Thomas Day was a British author and abolitionist who was well-known for his first work, the 1773 abolitionist poem 'The Dying Negro&apos. Despite his his extensive literary output, Day is now infamously known for his 'wife-training' project, in which he adopted two foundling girls (whom he renamed Sabrina Sidney and Lucretia) and subjected them to bizarre experiments in order to 'educate' them to be the perfect wife (partially due to his previous lack of success with women). Fortunately for the girls, Day soon gave up on the project, and later married an heiress from Chesterfield. Rebound in a half polished calf binding with marbled paper boards. Externally generally smart with slight rubbing to extremities, joints and boards. Internally firmly bound. Pages slightly age toned but very bright and clean throughout. Slight offsetting to extremities of pastedowns. Small mark to upper fore edge of page 151 (Cunningham), slightly offset to facing page. Very Good Indeed . Ill.: Various. Very Good Indeed .
