Created by famous German landscape painter and engraver, Karl Ludwig Frommel. The first, and only edition of this work. Undated, dated from copac and the watermark to endpaper, '1828 B & T S&apos. Prior owner's inscription to the verso of front endpaper, Thomas Pytches, Melton 1828. Pytches' inscription to the title page. It is likely that this work belonged to Thomas Pytches, a major in the East Suffolk Territorials. He was the father of John Thomas Pytches, an artist who was a member of the Ipswich Art Club and exhibited many works in 1875. With the title page, two engraved maps followed by the fifty engraved plates. With accompanying text to each plate, in German. All text to this work is unpaginated. Collated, complete. Needs some restorative work to the binding but very clean internally. The engravings to this work are to accompany Virgil's epic poem, 'The Aeneid&apos. The work tells the story of Trojan, Aeneas, who travelled to Italy. Karl Ludwig Frommel, or Carl Ludwig Frommel, was an engraver who studied under F J Becker and Haldenwang as a painter. It was not until he visited London in 1824 that he became acquainted with steel engraving and opened a studio alongside Henry Winkles at Karlsruhe for this form. A lovely selection of engravings. In a full calf binding. Externally, sound with slight rubbing to the joints and to the spine. Loss to the spine. Front board is detached but present. Rear joint and hinge are tender with the cords showing. Prior owner's inscription to the verso of front endpaper and to the title page. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with just the odd scattered spot, mostly to the page edges and to the tissue guards. Good Only . Ill.: C Frommel. Good Only .
