Both works are first editions. Being the second volume only of 'An Estimate of the Manners and Principles of the times' and the one and only volume of 'Characteristics of the Present Political State of Great Britain&apos. Both works are issued anonymously, with the author's later attributed. The author of the first work, 'An Estimate of the Manners and Principles of the times. By the author of Essays on the Characteristics, &c.' is John Brown. John Brown was an English Anglican priest who wrote many popular essays. This work was his most popular, which was first published in 1757-8. The work is a bitter satire which earned great popularity with the general public who were disenfranchised by the current war, (Seven Years' War). This is volume II only, lacking volume I. This volume is complete in itself, with the two leaves of advertisements to the rear. The author of the second work is known as the Scottish minister Robert Wallace. Here Wallace moves away from his usual field of demographics into taxation. He discusses banks, national debts, national riches and more. With the errata to the contents pages. With the half title for 'Characteristics' bound in just before leaf B2. ESTC Nos. T147672 and T84428. A smart copy of these two works. In a full calf binding. Externally, sound. Small loss to the second spine labels and to the spine, particularly the second two panels. Small loss to the head and tail of spine. Bumping to the extremities. Front hinge is strained but firm. Prior owners' inscriptions to the recto of front endpapers, in contemporary ink and in pencil. Contemporary ink notes to the rear pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright. Worm holes to the first 157 pages of the first work, not affecting any text. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with just the odd spots. Good . Ill.: None. Good .
