Letter from the author, address to Mr Harrison, tipped in to the verso to the front endpaper, dated July 16th 1894. 'Dear Mr Harrison, I beg your acceptance of the included volume, as a memento of a pleasant visit to your charming locality, and the kindness shown to myself. I have written nothing on antiquities, and therefore have nothing more suitable to offer you. Believe we 2 shall watch with the closet interest the result of any future development of your work, and in any event offer you my personal thanks as an enthusiastic worker in the engrossing theme you have engaged upon. Have not yet seen friend Preston, but hope to do so shortly. Yours truly, W. Cudworth. This work is a biography and a collection of letters by Abraham Sharp. Sharp was a mathematician and astronomer, being invited by the Astronomer Royal John Flamsteed to join the Greenwich Royal Observatory in 1688. He worked there improving instruments, and publishing logarithmic tables. He is also noted for calculating pi to seventy-two decimal places, briefly holding the record. With a frontispiece, folding pedigree of the Sharp family, one folding plate, and five plates. Written by William Cudworth. Cudworth was a noted shipbuilder and engineer, devoting himself to literature and philanthropy when he retired in 1883. In a half vellum binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, with some discolouration and marking to the vellum. A little rubbing to the paper to the boards. Author's ink inscription to the recto to the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with the odd scattered spot. Small tidemark to the head of the frontispiece. Good . Ill.: None. Good .
