Ferdinand Gregorovius - Geschichte Derm Stadt Rom IM Mitteldalter Von V Bis Zum XVI Jahrhundert

Title: Geschichte Derm Stadt Rom IM Mitteldalter Von V Bis Zum XVI Jahrhundert
Description: Berlin, JG Cottasche Buchhandlung, 1913-22. Cloth. Ferdinand Gregorovius' monumental eight volume work of the history of Rome in the Middle Ages, written in the original German. Complete in eight volumes. In the original German. 'Geschichte Derm Stadt Rom im Mitteldalter ' is a comprehensive look at the history of Rome, focussing on the city during the Middle Ages. During the Middle Ages the population of Rome fell to as low and twenty thousand people, and became an essentially irrelevant city, as it had a lack of construction activity. This lack of new buildings meant that the original ancient Roman buildings remain in the centre of the city, and have now became trademarks of the city. This monumental work was first published from 1859 to 1872, and has gone on to become a classic for Medieval and early Renaissance history of Rome. Written by Ferdinand Gregorovius. Gregorovius was a historian who specialised in the medieval history of Rome. He is best known for this history, and also for his 'Wanderjahre in Italien', an account of his travels on foot in Italy in the 1850s. He also wrote biographies of Pope Alexander Vi and Lucrezia Borgia. Gregorovius moved to Italy in 1852, and lived there for over twenty years, being the first German to be made an honorary citizen of Rome, with a street and square named after him. Volumes II, and III published in 1913. Volumes I, IV, V, VI, VII, and VIII published in 1922. In a half cloth binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, generally smart. Light fading to the front board of Volume I. A little rubbing to the boards of Volumes III, IV, V, VI, VII, and VIII. Light rubbing to the extremities. Light fading and rubbing to the spines.
