Edward Howard; Capt F Marryat - Rattlin the Reefer

Title: Rattlin the Reefer
Description: London, Richard Bentley, 1836. Leather. The second edition of this gripping maritime novel by English novelist and magazine editor, Edward Howard. An illustrated triple decker, with nine plates across the volumes by Auguste Hervieu. This sea-faring novel is noted to the title page as being edited by 'the author of Peter Simple' which meant that for several years the work was erroneously attributed to Captain Marryat. Marryat edited the work for his friend and shipmate, Edward Howard. The two edited the 'Metropolitan Magazine' together, with Marryat as the editor and Howard as the sub-editor. With the bookplate of Sir Norton Joseph Knatchbull, the 10th Baronet of Mersham Hatch to the front pastedown of volume II. This is one of Howard's better known works, the other being 'Sir Henry Morgan&apos. With a frontispiece and two plates to each volume by Auguste Jean Jacques Hervieu, the French painter and book illustrator. Hervieu worked in London and exhibited at the Royal Academy. He created the illustrations for Frances Trollope's 'A Summer in Brittany' and many more works by Trollope. Regarded as a semi-autobiographical tale by many, despite this never being confirmed by Howard, 'Rattlin the Reefer' looks at the protagonist's early schooling, to life as a midshipman and his experiences sailing. Told in a humorous manner, this story's accuracy regarding life at sea is one of its charms and the reasoning for it receiving such high praise. Howard has clearly drawn on his own life experiences in the early 1800's in the Navy. In a half straight grained morocco binding. Externally, smart. Patches of light rubbing to the joints and extremities. Scattered spots to boards. Front hinge to volume I is strained but firm. Front hinge to volume II is strained but firm. Internally, all volumes are firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with scattered spots, mostly to the first and last few pages in addition to the plates. Very Good . Ill.: A Herveiu. Very Good .
