The complete three volumes of Sir John Dalrymple's comprehensive history of Great Britain and Ireland from the dissolution of the last Parliament of Charles II until the turn of the eighteenth century. Volumes I and II are second editions, with volume III being a scarce first edition. Dalrymple originally wrote the first two volumes in 1771 and 1773 respectively. The two volumes to this set are second editions, published in the first year of publication. Several years later, in 1778, Dalrymple penned a continuation volume. This volume is noted to the title page as being 'Volume II' despite its intentions to be a third volume. Volumes I and II finish at the Sea Battle off La Hogue and volume III continues from this point until the Siege of the French and Spanish fleets at the Battle of Vigo Bay. Volume II of this work is three appendices bound together. Volume III has irregular pagination and register, although the text is continuous as called for. Pages 31-32 and 95-06 are repeated as called for. With an engraved title page to volume III. Collated, all volumes are complete. ESTC no for volume I is T145647. ESTC no for volume II is T145646. ESTC no for Volume III is T145648. Sir John Dalrymple was a Scottish advocate, judge and author. This work is his best known, which was inspired by his research undertaken on behalf of David Hume when he was writing his own 'History of England&apos. Hume asked Dalrymple to search the French state archives for his work and Dalrymple discovered several secret agreements made between Charles II and Louis XIV regarding Roman Catholicism. A fascinating history, penned by one of the central figures of the Scottish Enlightenment. In full calf bindings. Rebacked with original spines preserved. Externally, generally smart. Patches of rubbing to the joints and extremities. Loss to the head of spine to volume II. Further rubbing to the head and tail of spine. Front hinge to volume III is slightly strained but firm. Bookplate of one Caroli Ricardi Nairne Routh to the front pastedown of all volumes. Their inscription to the recto of front endpaper. Internally, all volumes are firmly bound.
