Description: London, A Bettesworth, 1721. Cloth. The second edition of this scarce, occult essay collection by the English antiquary, natural philosopher and writer John Aubrey. This work was the only one published by Aubrey during his lifetime, with the first copy being published in 1696. The 21 short chapters centre around the theme of 'hermetick philosophy&apos. Therefore, each section discusses supernatural phenomena and the occult. Chapters include 'transportation in the air', 'converse with angels and spirits' and 'omens&apos. This enlarged, second edition of Aubrey's work contains a life of the author. ESTC No. T89806. To this work, Aubrey provides documented reports of supernatural manifestations. Aubrey was a keen archaeologist who recorded many megalithic monuments in southern England. He is noted for discovering the Avebury henge monument. In the field of archaeology Aubrey was pioneering and was often the first to record such phenomena. Rebound in a full cloth binding. Externally, excellent with minor shelfwear.
