An expanded edition of this essay collection, which was first published in 1724 as one volume. A very scarce work, with essays on various subjects. First thus, the first edition in two volumes. This work is very scarce in any edition. Rebound in full cloth bindings, and bound without the original endpapers. The topics of these essays span from friendship, love, gallantry, marriage and morality to history, poetry and mercantile affairs. ESTC no. T135939. The works have been published anonymously, but are knowingly attributed to Aaron Hill and William Bond. Printed the same year as the Dublin imprint. Pages 481-2 of volume I have the incorrect running title as called for, 'no.117&apos. With a frontispiece to volume I. Volume I contains 57 essays whereas volume II contains 40. Aaron Hill was an English dramatist who was a perfectionist when it came to his writings. Some believed that his polished nature lead to a lack in spontaneity with his dramatic works. He famously had some controversy with Alexander Pope after he wrote several satiric lines on him. This then meant that Hill was referenced in Pope's 'Dunciad' which fuelled the controversy. Hill managed the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane when he was 24 years old. Whilst doing so he staged the premier of George Frideric Handel's 'Rinaldo&apos. This was the first Italian opera designed for a London audience. These essays contain critical views on a variety of literature, art and society. Rebound, in full cloth bindings. Externally, excellent with minor shelfwear. Stamps to the title pages of both volumes, 'New York Historical Society&apos. Internally, both volumes are firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned to edges with occasional scattered spots. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
