ESTC no.T101978. This volume features the writing of eminent politician and author Soame Jenyns. With a large selection of poetical, religious and political works this uncommon volume showcases the literary talents of this often forgotten 18th century writer. Though his literary success can be accredited, in part,to his large wealth and high status, much of Jenyns's works were highly regarded during his lifetime, with his religious works defending Christianity among his most warmly received. However, his career was not without controversy, with Samuel Johnson famously criticising his essay 'Free Inquiry into the Nature and Origin of Evil&apos. To this, Jenyn's addresses the preface of the second edition of this work to Johnson. Comprised of a series of letters 'Free Inquiry into the Nature and Origin of Evil' is featured in this collection. Among the numerous other works featured in the volume titles include: 'The Art of Dancing', 'An Essay of Virtue', 'The Choice', 'Cupid Reliev'd', 'Philosophical Considerations on the Nature of Time' and 'Short but series Reasons for a National Militia&apos. Despite Johnson criticisms, Jenyns saw considerable success during his life time. Though his works have largely been overshadowed by his contemporaries, Soame Jenyns writing, informed by his career in politics, offers an interesting look into the religious and socio-economic beliefs of the 18th century.
