Author: Robert Huish Title: Memoirs of George the Fourth, Descriptive of the Most Interesting Scenes of His Private and Public Life, and the Important Events of His Memorable Reign; with Characteristic Sketches of All the Celebrated Men Who Were His Friends and Companions As a Prince and His Ministers and Counsellors As a Monarch
Description: London, T. Kelly; Fisher, Son, and P. Jackson; et al, 1831. Leather. An illustrated and informative biography on George IV, the son of the mad George III, written by Robert Huish. Complete in two volumes. This work is an entertaining and informative biography of George IV, who also served as Prince Regent for his father. He led an extravagant lifestyle, but also a dissolute way of life, and had very poor relationships with his parents and his wife. This meant that he was viewed with contempt by the people, believing him selfish, unreliable, and irresponsible. George became Regent after his father, George III, found his mental health to be greatly deteriorating. With George III's reputation of being a mad king, George IV has the reputation of being a voluptuous, over-indulgent royal. Written by Robert Huish. Huish was a prolific writer, publishing many historical works and novels. He wasn't greatly appreciated as a writer during his life, however. With a frontispiece to each volume, seven plates to Volume I, and nine plates to Volume II. Collated, complete. In the original half calf binding with marbled paper boards. Externally, generally smart. Rubbing to the paper to the boards. Light discolouration to the joints, spines, and extremities. Surface cracks to the spines, with loss to the head and tail of the spine of Volume I. The odd spot to the fore edges. Cracks to the joints of Volume II. Front hinge of Volume II is starting but firm. Front board of Volume I is held by cords only. Label to the rear pastedowns, 'T & M Kennard, Ancient and Modern Booksellers, Leamington Spa&apos. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with the odd scattered spot, heavier to the plates. First few pages of Volume I are working loose. Small tape repair to the verso of the plate facing page 340 in Volume II. Good . Ill.: Various. Good .
