Author: Henry Hallam Title: View of the State of Europe During the Middle Ages
Description: London, John Murray, 1856. Leather. A three volume set of Henry Hallam's extensive look at Europe during the Middle Ages, with his supplementary notes included. Complete in three volumes. This work is a comprehensive history and view of Europe during the period dubbed the Middle Ages, which ran from the fifth to the fifteenth century. The period began with the fall of the Roman Empire, and began to end with the beginning of the Renaissance and the Age of Discovery. The author looks into detail into France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Greece, and England. Hallam described the work as a series of historical dissertations, dealing with the feudal system, the ecclesiastical system, and the political systems that were in operation during this time. These volumes also contain his 'Notes', which were originally published separately, written as he said that there was also more to elaborate on, correct, and add. Henry Hallam was originally a barrister in Oxford, before turning his mind to history and writing many books about European history. His publications include "The Constitutional History of England", and "Introduction to the Literature of Europe in the Fifteenth, Sixteenth, and Seventeenth Centuries".
