Containing 'Letters Addressed to the Daughter of a Nobleman, on the Formation of Religious and Moral Principle' complete in two volumes, and 'Translation of the Letters of a Hindoo Rajah', also complete in two volumes. Hamilton's 'Translation of the Letters of a Hindoo Rajah' is a fascinating satirical work on major issues of her day, and serves as an important text on the contemporary views of British society towards colonisation, an issue that was a key focus of political debates in the eighteenth and nineteenth century. 'Letters Addressed to the Daughter of a Nobleman' This copy of 'Letters Addressed to the Daughter of a Nobleman' is a second edition of the work, with the first edition published in the same year. This copy of Hamilton's 'Translation of the Letters of a Hindoo Rajah' is a fifth edition copy. Featuring a bookplate of an 'Edward Hood Linzee' to the front pastedown of each volume. Rebound in a uniform speckled calf binding with gilt detail to spines. Externally, very slightly bumped to extremities. Minor rubbing to the joints. Front joint partially split to tail but firm, 'Hindoo Rajah' volume I and II. Front hinge to 'Hindoo Rajah' volume II is tender. Small loss to lower spine label, 'Daughter', volume I. Slight marking to boards, 'Daughter', volume II and 'Hindoo Rajah' volume II. Front hinge strained but firm to all volumes. Rear hinge, tender but relatively firm, 'Hindoo Rajah' volume II. Prior owner's bookplate tipped to each pastedown. Tidemark to extremities of endpapers, all volumes. Booksellers label tipped to rear pastedown, 'Daughter', volume I and 'Hindoo Rajah' volume I. Internally firmly bound. Pages slightly age toned but very clean, with only the odd spot. Odd handling mark to the occasional page. Offsetting to extremities of last few pages, 'Hindoo Rajah' volume I and II, not affecting text. Offsetting to extremities of first few pages, 'Hindoo Rajah' volume II, not affecting text.
