Description: London, J. Johnson, 1809. Vellum. A collection of works by Quintus Horatius Flaccus, with notes by WIlliam Baxter, Johann Matthais Gesner, and Zeunius. A collection of works by Horace. Quintus Horatius Flaccus was a Roman poet, and was one of the most popular poets of the Augustus era in Rome. His poems often touch on the themes love, friendship, and philosophy. He is generally considered to be the greatest writer of Latin lyric poems. William Baxter, a Welsh scholar, published his edition of Horace's works in 1701, and was generally considered to be the best edition of Horace ever published at the time. Johann Matthias Gesner, a German classical scholar, made Baxter's edition the basis of his own, before, in 1788, C. Zeunius incorpoated both of Baxter and Gesner's notes into one volume. In the original half vellum binding with paper covered boards. Externally, with discolouration to the boards and to the spine, due to the light colour of the vellum and paper. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Paper is lifting to the front board to the tail of the front board to the joint. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with only the odd scattered spot. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
