To Volume II the pages xxii-xix have been mistakenly bound in backwards between pages 594 and 595. Collated, complete. With a vignette title page to each volume. The vignette to volume I is 'Site of Chaenoboscion' and 'The False Pyramid' to the second volume. These two volumes document James Augustus St John's travels to Egypt and Nubia in 1832. He mostly travelled on foot. This was the first of three works he wrote regarding these travels. Gift inscription to the recto of front endpaper to volume I, 'Johnson and Osborn Wilkinson on Their Leaving Eton, From Mr Hamilton' James Augustus St John was author and traveller who started the 'Weekly Review' alongside David Lester Richardson in 1827. He travelled through many parts of Europe before embarking on his Egyptian exploration. In uniform full calf bindings. Externally, generally smart. Spines are rubbed, mostly to the raised bands. Patches of rubbing to the extremities and to the joints. Front hinge is weak and may detach with further handling. Front hinge to volume I is strained but firm. Rear hinge to volume II is tender and may detach with further handling. Internally, both volumes are generally firmly bound though strained in places. Pages are bright with just the odd spots. Good .
