This collection of poetry includes 'The Kingsis Quair', a fifteenth century poem that is attributed to King James I of Scotland. The poem depicts his capture by the English, and his imprisonment by Henry IV, V, and VI of England; 'Peblis to the Play', another poem which is often attirbuted to James I, however his authorship is much debated; 'Christis Kirk on the Green', which was published anonymously but is again often attributed to either James I or James V, the poem giving a comic account of a brawl at a country fair; 'The Gaberlunzineman', attributed to James V, a humorous and graphic poem, and more. Also with a life of James the First, James the V, as well as short overviews of the lives of other Scottish monarchs. This work is by George Chalmers, a Scottish antiquarian who left his major work 'Caledonia', unfinished upon his death. With a frontispiece, and a folding plate showing a facsimile of James I's handwriting. Bookplate to the front pastedown, belonging to a Henry Ernest Crawley. Collated, complete. In the original full crushed morocco binding. Externally, with slight rubbing to the spine, joints, and to the extremities. Some loss to the rear board and to the head and tail of the spine due to the rubbing. A little marking to the boards. Bookplate to the front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound.
