Two volumes in one, being volumes XLI and XLII of 'Proceedings of the Somersetshire Archaeological & Natural History Society for the Years 1895 and 1896&apos. The Somerset Archaeological and Natural History Society was established in 1849, showing the contemporary interest in county history and archaeology. In the 1870s, they acquired Taunton's medieval castle for their headquarters, though it urgently needed repairs. The Society published annual journals from 1852, 'Proceedings', containing scholarly papers on archaeology, ecology, and history of Somerset. Volume XLI contains 'The Clevedon Family' by John Maclean, 'The Battle of Lansdown' by the Dean of Wells, 'On a Map of Mendip' by the Bishop Hobhouse, and more. Volume XLII contains 'The Lady of Poyntington' by John Batten', 'The Siege of Sherborne Castle' by Hugh Norris, 'The Family of De Urtiaco' by E. H. Bates, and more. With two plates and three folding plates to Volume XLI, and four plates and one folding plate to Volume XLII. In the original half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards.Externally, generally smart. Light marking and rubbing to the boards. Light discolouration and marking to the spine. Lacking most of the spine label. Patches of rubbing to the joints and to the extremities, resulting in a little loss of paper to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean.
