Description: London, W Frederick, 1769. Leather. An eighteenth century publication of popular Elizabethan courtier Sir John Harington's writings. Harington was prominent in Elizabeth I's court and was known to fall in and out of her favour due to his controversial writings. This work comprises of letters, prose and poetry by Harrington. Including letters to other people of note including Prince Henry, Sir Anthony Standen and Sir Hugh Portman. Poems by Harrigton include 'Sonnet', 'Elegy wrote in the Tower' and 'Verses on Lord Admiral Seymour's Picture' With a portrait frontispiece of Queen Elizabeth I, which was first engraved in 1554. With two further folding plates of music and harmonic ratios. To this work there is an appendix containing a specimen of some letters from a Georgian merchant at Bath to his friend in London. The contents pages have been misbound after the first leaf of the preface (between pages 4 and 5). Harington/Harrington was regarded as Queen Elizabeth's godson. He was one of 102 godchildren. He is also known for inventing the flushing toilet. In a quarter calf binding with paper covered boards. Externally, rubbed to the joints and extremities. Further heavy rubbing to the paper covered boards. Loss to the leather at the head and tail of spine due to rubbing. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with just the occasional scattered spots. Good . Ill.: None. Good .
