A uniformly bound five volume set of James Harris' 'Miscellanies' comprising of his 'Three Treatises', 'Hermes', 'Philosophical Arrangements' and 'Philological Inquiries&apos. Complete in five volumes. James Harris was an English politician and grammarian. His best known work is 'Hermes, a Philosophical Inquiry' which is to volume II. Volumes IV and V are first editions and were published at the same time, following Harris' death. The works were printed ready for publication in 1780 but were stalled until 1781 due to his death. Illustrated, with a frontispiece to all volumes. Volume I contains a preliminary leaf which lists all five volumes to this work. Volumes I-III are individual works; with volume I being'Three Treatises, The First Concerning Art: the Second Concerning Music, Painting and Poetry: The Third Concerning Happiness'; volume II is 'Hermes; or, a Philosophical Inquiry Concerning Universal Grammar'; and volume III is 'Philosophical Arrangements containing a variety of Speculations.. derived from the principles of the Greek Philosophers&apos. Volumes IV and V are Harris' Philological Inquiries, with volume IV being parts I and II and volume V being part III. This set comprises of mixed editions, which all have uniform typography and layout. Being: Vol I 1792 Fifth Edition Vol II 1794 Fifth Edition Vol III 1799 A New Edition Vol IV 1781 First Edition Vol V 1781 First Edition. ESTC citation for this work N25696. Volume IV and V were printed before Harris died and were sold following his death as was his 'desire' according to the preface. The preface notes an engraving to page 542 of the second volume (vol V) which was made from an impression in sulphur of a gem belonging to Harris. This plate is bound as the frontispiece to volume V. Uniform half-titles to all volumes. With the bookplate of Sir Edward Strachey of Sutton court to the front pastedowns. Strachey was a man of letters and wrote several works including 'A Commentary on the Marriage Service' and 'Miracles and Science&apos. Strachey was the third Baronet. A charming set of this famed grammarian's works. In uniform full calf bindings. Externally, generally smart with patches of rubbing to the boards at the extremities and to the spines. Volume III is lacking both spine labels. Volumes I and II are lacking small portions of both spine labels. Gilt to the spines has faded. Prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedowns, Sir Edward Strachey. Internally, all volumes are firmly bound. Index leaf to volume V is missing a portion to the margin, not affecting text.
