A collection of three works by Charles Cotton, including 'Scarronides: or, Virgil Travestie', 'Lucian Burlesqu'd: or, The Scoffer Scoff'd', and 'The Wonders of the Peake&apos. A rare 1745 edition with three folding plates as opposed to the 1715 edition with only one. Charles Cotton was an English poet, writer, and translator. He often wrote in a burlesque style, with his worked being humorous and often ludicrous. Cotton was also passionate about fishing, and had a small fishing house on the banks of the River Dove. With the plates 'Aeolus at the Request of Juno Raised a storm to wreck the Trojans', 'Venus addresses Jupiter in behalf of her son Aeneas whom afterward she meets in a wood', 'Dido discovers her liking for Aeneas to her sister Nancy. Juno discourses Venus about uniting Dido and Aeneas and contirveth an oppertunity for them to make trial', 'Dido after weeping over Aeneas in Effigie hangs herself', 'Mercury and Vulcan nailing Prometheus to a rock', 'The judgement of Paris', 'The Duke of Devonshire"s house at Chatsworth near the Peake Derbyshire', 'Pools Hole or cave and Edden hole', and 'The devil"s arse near Castleton&apos. Collated, with nine folding plates. Copies held at English Short Title Catalogue and Cambridge University each only have eight plates. In the original full calf binding. Externally, some marking and rubbing to the boards. Front board may detach with further handling. Rear joint and hinge is strained. Spine is discoloured with some surface cracks, and some loss to the head and the tail. Bumping has caused some loss to the extremities. Endpapers and pastedowns are discoloured. Prior owner's ink inscription to the front pastedown, 'Collated, perfect', and an ink inscription to the recto to the front pastedown. Internally, generally firmly bound, with some pages lifting to the head but remaining secure. Pages are bright and generally clean with just the odd mark. Light edgewear to the folding plates, with the folding plate facing page 74 is lightly discoloured to the fore edge. Good Only . Ill.: Not Stated. Good Only .
