Madame de Stael was alive during a tumultuous time in history, as she saw the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Era. Germaine was the daughter of Jacques Necker, the finance minister for Louis XVI, who had made deicisons that were critical in staring the outbreak of the French Revolution. She was an ardent letter writer, and so she documented the society and events of the time in great detail. Germaine also lived in exile during the Reign of Terror, later coming into opposition with Napoleon. She was known throughout her life for being witty and a brilliant conversationalist, making her well liked, and well despised by those who opposed her. Written by Lady Charlotte Blennerhassett. Blennerhasset was a German biographer, who took to writing after her marriage to the fourth of the Blennerhasset baronets, an influential title. Though she is best known for this biography, she also wrote one on Mary Queen of Scots. Translated from German into English by J. E. Gordon Cumming. Frontispiece to Volume I. Bookplate to the front pastedowns, 'Ex Libris E. A. Morrison, Jr', with his stamps to the recto to the front free endpapers. Errata slip bound in to Volumes I and III, with a full errata page to Volume II. In the original half morocco binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, smart. Light rubbing to the joints and to the extremities, with very little rubbing to the raised bands. Minor rubbing to the paper to the boards, being a little heavier to Volume I. A very small mark to the spine of Volume I. Bookplate to the front pastedowns, 'Ex Libris E. A. Morrison, Jr', with his stamps to the recto to the front free endpapers. The very odd light spot to the fore edges. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean, with just the very odd scattered spot and handling mark.
