'Ulric the Farm Servant' is a novel by the Swiss novelist Jeremais Gotthelf. The novel tells the story of Ulric, a poor peasant labourer. Over the course of the novel, he develops into the owner of a prosperous farm. Gotthelf also wrote a sequel to this novel, entitled 'Ulric the Tenant&apos. Gotthelf started his writing career late in life, after working in the church. Some of his other works include 'The Black Spider', 'Anne-Babi Jowager', 'Kathi, die Grossmutter', and 'Die Kaserei in der Vehfreude&apos. Translated into English from the original German by Julia Firth. In a Palmer Howe and Co binding, with their binder's stamp to the verso of front endpaper. Revised and edited with notes by John Ruskin. Ruskin was the most influential art critic of the Victorian era, who also wrote widely on various other subjects, including architecture, education, botany, and politics. In the original signed half morocco binding with marbled paper to the boards, bound by Palmer Howe & Co in Manchester. Externally, rubbing to the joints, extremities, and to the raised bands. A little discolouration to the spine. Binders stamp to the verso to the front endpaper, 'Bound by Palmer Howe & Co Manchester&apos. Prior owner's pencil inscription to the recto to the front free endpaper, 'L. M. Ribbin, Feb 21st 1900&apos. Internally, firmly bound.
