Galsworthy was passed over for military service during the First World War, however he went to France to work in a hospital, eager to help in the effort. Galsworthy won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1932. He is best known for his 'Forsythe Saga', however he was also a strong advocate in various pressing social causes at the time, including prison reform, women's rights, and animal welfare.
