[Edmund Hatfield (editor)] - The Legend of Saint Ursula and the Virgin Martyrs of Cologne

Title: The Legend of Saint Ursula and the Virgin Martyrs of Cologne
Description: London, John Camden Hotten, 1869. Cloth. An excellent illustrated quarto work of the legend of The Saint Ursula. Scarce. With a beautiful coloured frontispiece and ornate engraved borders throughout. This beautiful work tells the story of The Legend of Saint Ursula, a princess who, at the request of her father set sail along with eleven thousand other virginal handmaidens to join her husband-to-be. After a storm brought them over a sea in just a day, she decided to first take a pilgrimage to Rome and persuaded the Pop to join her. On her journey she was besieged by Huns and all the virgins were beheaded in a massacre. The legend is based upon a 4th or 5th century inscription from the Church of St Ursula in Cologne, at which it was said some of the holy virgins were killed. In a red cloth binding with gilt detail. Externally smart with slight bumping to the extremities and the head and tail of the spine resulting in some slight loss and fraying to the cloth. Slight loss to the spine label. Marks to the boards. Front hinge is slightly strained resulting in the first few pages to loosen slightly. Institutional stamps to front pastedown and front free endpaper. Internally firmly bound. Pages bright and clean with just the odd spot heavier to the first and last few pages. The odd handling mark. Occasional mild offsetting from previous owner leaf pressing. Very Good . Ill.: Not Stated. Very Good .
