David Hume was a Scottish historian, best known today for his philosophical work. He was ahead of his time in disbelieving the teleological argument for God's existence. He original published his 'The History of England' in six volumes from 1754 to 1763. He was one of the first historians to write more broadly, not just focusing on politics and royalty, but looking at literature and science as well. This work was a bestseller and make Hume very wealthy. Hume was then followed by Tobias Smollett, an author, who viewed his own 'The History of England' as his greatest work. Smollett focused his research on the eighteenth century. Smollett was best known as an author, who's works, including 'The Adventures of Roderick Random', 'The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle', and 'The Expedition of Humphry Clinker', inspired the likes of Charles Dickens. Thomas Smart Hughes finished 'The History of England', expanding Hume and Smollet's works to include the nineteenth century. He was a cleric and historian, whose continuation of Hume and Smollet's 'History' was undertaken at the request of A. J. Valpy, the publisher. His 'History' continuation was originally published in monthly issues, before being published into book form alongside the rest of the works. All volumes present have been collated and are complete.
