His travels provided him with the passion and information for this book, which looks at the great houses of France. Most of the photographs in this book are by Frederick Evans. Evans primarily photographed architecture, especially cathedrals. He used the plantnotype technique for his photography, though as it was too expensive, was forced to use cheaper alternatives.
