Description: London, T Warner, 1713. First edition. Unbound. A very scarce first edition of this response to Sir Robert Walpole's 'Short History of Parliament' by eccentric bookseller John Dunton. This was Dunton's final work before his death. Dunton was an English bookseller and author. He founded the successful 'The Athenian Gazette' otherwise known as 'Casuistical Mercury' which was the first popular periodical in England with the longevity of seven years in print. Readers would send their queries on any topic which were answered by the 'Athenian Society', a club purported to be learned men who met at Smith's Coffee House. The 'Athenian Society' comprised of Dunton, Wesley and Richard Sault. Dunton made great contributions to the Whig propaganda of his time and his eccentricity and experimentation in the literary form formed quite the legacy. Sir Robert Walpole was a British statesman, who is regarded as the de facto first Prime Minister of Great Britain. This work is John Dunton's response to his 'Short History of Parliament.' Disbound, lacking the front and rear boards. The remaining spine is rubbed, with the loss to the head and tail. Loss to the title page to the tail. Offsetting to the rear pages. Spotting to the fore-edge. Evidence of worming to the bottom of the pages, with a small hole affecting all of the pages, though not the text. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are age toned with the odd spot throughout. Overall: VERY GOOD though Disbound. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
