Author: A S T Godfrey Title: The Cradle of the North Wind
Description: London, Methuen & Co LTD, 1938. Cloth. Arthur Godfrey's humorous book on his experience on an expedition to the Arctic, filled with anecdotes of isolation in the North. Arthur Godfrey was one of the men who went on the 1935 - 1936 Oxford University Arctic Expedition, being isolated in the freezing north for fourteen months. Godfrey's telling of his experience is insightful and humorous, focusing more of the personal side of it, rather than the professional reason that the expedition set out. He states that he went on the expedition only for adventure and enjoyment and that he had to look up the terms 'ecology' and 'glaciology' in the dictionary. Including a chapter on his homeward journey, being alone for two months in a Norwegian sealer, and of hunting seals, walruses, and bears. With a frontispiece and illustrated map endpapers by K C Jordan. In the original publisher's cloth binding with the original price-clipped dustwrapper. Externally, smart. Some marking to the boards, causing a little discolouration. Light bumping to the head and tail of spine and to the extremities. Some loss to the top outer corner of the front endpaper, however doesn't affect map printed of the recto of the front endpaper. Dustwrapper has chips to the front flyleaf and to the spine. Closed tear to the bottom of the hinge to the front flyleaf. Minor discolouration to the spine and front flyleaf. Light markings to the rear flyleaf. Internally, firmly bound.
