The 'Breakfast Series' by Oliver Wendell Holmes. 'The Autocrat of the Breakfast Table' and 'The Professor of the the Breakfast Table' are dated 1911, whilst 'The Poet of the Breakfast Table' is dated 1913. Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. was American poet, and physician. Though he was known as a poet it was the 'Breakfast Series' that gained him international fame. The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table originally started as a segment in the The Atlantic Monthly, and was later collated into a book. Comprised of a series of essays, between the author and the residents of a boarding house, known only by their profession. This first book later became a three volume series. The three different speakers are, the Professor, the Autocrat and the Poet. The work is very much influenced by Holmes's own views on the topics of science, medicine and morality. Acquired from a sale of the publisher J.M Dent's reference library, with this works being 'File Copies&apos. With 'File Copy' stamps to several leaves. Joseph Malaby Dent was a British book publisher best known for the Everyman's library series. Illustrated throughout by H M Brock, a British illustrator and landscape painter. He mostly illustrated for classic Victorian and Edwardian fiction. His work has also been exhibited regularly in the Royal Academy. Collated complete. In a uniform cloth binding. Externally smart. Bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and to the extremities. Small mark to the front joint of 'The Autocrat&apos. Rubbing to the spines. Slight sunning to the front and rear boards, mainly affecting the cloth binding. Stamps to the front endpapers of each volume. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally clean. 'The Autocrat' is missing the tissue-guard to the frontispiece. Offsetting to the half tile pages of 'The Poet' and 'The Professor&apos. The odd handling mark throughout each volume.
