Albert Dresden Vandam's book 'An Englishman in Paris' was originally anonymously published. A collection note and observations on the discussions and gossip from the courts of Louis Philippe and the Empire, the volumes present an insider's view of the French empire. Albert Dresden Vandam was born in London in 1843, and spent much of his young adult life in Paris, where he was privately educated. Much of his youth was spent amongst prominent and influential French figures. He later became a journalist writing for English and American papers, as a war correspondence. Vandam settled in England and remained a journalist, whilst also working as a translator, translating literary works from French into Dutch. Previous owners bookplate to the front pastedown of both volume I and II. Two volumes in uniform half morocco binding, with marbled boards. Externally, smart. Some rubbing to the head and tail of the spine, resulting in a small amount of loss to the head and tail of volume I, and the head of volume II. there is also some slight rubbing to the joints, and to the extremities, with a small amount of loss to the front board of volume II. Slight rubbing to the front and rear boards of both volumes. Offsetting to the front and rear endpapers, and pastedowns. Previous owners bookplate to the front pastedown of each volume. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally clean, with the odd spot throughout. Very Good Indeed . Ill.: None. Very Good Indeed .
