Author: KASNER, EDWARD AND JAMES NEWMAN Title: Mathematics and the Imagination
Description: Simon & Schuster, 1940/1940, Stated Second Printing.. Hardcover . Same date 1940 cp and tp - so a 1940 printing but w/ cp statement of Second Printing. Hardback, octavo, gilt spine titling and front cover emblem (in Mathematics, the Hebrew numeral one) on red cloth covers, VG or better/no dj (stiff clear acetate dustwrapper provided to preserve condition). Snug binding, not much for any general cover wear but front cover 1-inch slightly diagonal top corner bump of little notice & 1/2-inch long (neat/not of great notice) depression/puncture in front joint near head of spine that has somehow punctured through to (and neatly through) the book s front hinge (visible there but functioning of the hinge not compromised). Fountain pen name ffep o/w interior quite nice. Laid-in is copy of an appx 3x6 inch section of interior dj flap (probably the back flap) containing the brief bios of each of the 2 authors that had been affixed to the ifc of another copy of the book. Cover cloth a deep red, not slightly orange-red as was showing when I took the photos, so showing the deep red of the spine in an older photo with the book juxtaposed next to another copy. Book contains the first use in print of the word googol (the number one followed by 100 zeroes), a word for which author Kasner gave credit to his nephew for having created. Very Good.
