He was a prolific writer with over twenty historical romances, and numerous historical works to his credit. With Ferdinand Sere he wrote a famous five volume history of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. In 1885 he was appointed the librarian of the Arsenal. this book is as famous for its illustrations as for its text.
