FIRST EDITION by Warton. 2 volumes. 4to, 288 x 224 mms., pp. [iv], lx [lxi - lxii], 236 [237 - 316 indexes]; [iv], 412 [413 - 416 index, addenda, and corrections], [v] - vii [viii blank], 45 [46 blank, 47 - 48 Index], 5H1 in volume 2 in uncancelled state, later (early 19th century( fine polished calf, gilt border on covers, all edges gilt, with the armorial crest of Frederick, Earl of Cawdor in gilt on each cover; spine sun-darkened and very slightly chipped, but a sumptuous copy, from the library of John Campbell, first Earl of Cawdor (1790 - 1860). The appendix at the end of volume 2 was issued in 1772 and doesn't appear in earlier issues. Warton's fine edition of Theocritus was noticed in The Critical Review, volume 29, 1770: "We find it difficult to pronounce whether the editor of the Oxford Theocritus discovers a greater share of taste or of erudition. Works of this kind have been too commonly executed by scholars of more industry than genius. But Mr. Warton, in this valuable publication, has happily blended the characters of the judicious critic and the learned commentator.... It is not easy to display, especially within the limits of our paper, the various parts and merits of this edition. Let is suffice to add, that while writers of real abilities are engaged in illustrating the original poets of ancient Greece, we may venture to promise ourselves the revival of true taste, genuine criticism, and Grecian literature." The Monthly Review for July, 1770, chimed in its approval: "It is with particular pleasure that we find that the very ingenious and learned Mr. Warton, late Poetry Professor in the University of Oxford, has given the public an elegant and accurate edition of Theocritus."
