Description: Edinburgh: Adam and Charles Black..., 1855. FIRST EDITION. 6 volumes. 8vo, 192 x 124 mms., pp. xvi, 364, iv [adverts]; xxii [xxiii drop-title, xxiv blank], 352; xxxii, 288; xxii [xxiii drop-title, xxiv blank], 296; xxx, xi [xii blank, xiii drop-title, xiv blank], 296; xxxii, 282 [283 - 284 adverts for works by Charles Rogers], additional engraved title in each volume, engraved frontispiece in each volume, original blue cloth, gilt spines, with binder's ticket of John Gray, Edinburgh, in 5 of the six volumes (on the rear paste-down end-paper) bookplate of W. A. L. Walker, 1944 on the front paste-down end-paper of each volume. A very good set. The Church of Scotland minister and historian Charles Rogers (1825–1890) was one of the contributors to the New Statistical Account of Scotland, but in his later career he was often accused of manipulating public funds to his own advantage. In 1884–6 he published three volumes on Social Life in Scotland from Early to Recent Times, which was until rcent the most comprehensive work available on Scottish social history. The entry in ODNB records that "His publications require 106 entries in the British Library catalogue; and, if their quality fails to match their quantity, some items remain useful over 100 years later. Nor is their author and editor, for all his failings, without some historical significance."
