Title: The Sisters: Or, The History of Lucy and Caroline Sanson, entrusted to A False Friend. In Two Volumes. By the Rev. Dr. Dodd.
Description: London: Printed for Harrison and Co..., 1781. 8vo (in 4s), 210 x 128 mms., pp. vi [7] - 169 [170 blank], 4 full-page engraved plates (by Heath and Angus after Stothard (bound out of sequence), printed in double columns, recently rebound in buckram; some slight foxing and spotting of text. "The Macaroni Parson" and forger William Dodd (1729 -1777) first published this novel, described by Philip Rawlings in ODNB, as " a novel whose dullness at least conceals its limp eroticism," in 1754. As a sample of "limp eroticism," I cite this passage: "They [Lucy and Captain Smith] scarce permitted the supper to come and go, (so eager were both for a more delicate repast) before the maid was ordered to help her mistress to undress; and she, covered over with blushes, retired into the next room, and her undoing. The captain could scarce stay a few short minutes before he flew to her, and finding her half dressed and half displayed, the most inviting and delicious situation! with his own glowing fingers he freed her from her other incumbrances, and locking the door, put a stop to all her virgin fears...." The text here is that of The Novelist's Magazine, published by Harrison, 1780 - 1788. So far as I can tell, the illustrations appear here for the first time.
