Title: Poem Read at the Twenty-Fifth Anniversary of the Massachusetts State Grange. P. of H.
Description: No place No publisher, but probably Massachusetts State Grange 1898. FIRST EDITION. 8vo, 230 x 160 mms., pp. 8, card covers, with text barely attached and front cover holding on for dear life, title taken from front cover, inscribed on half-title, "Compliments of the Author." Alice Morehouse Walker (1855-1929) was a well-known historian of New England, and her books Historic Hadley: A Story of the Making of a Famous Massachusetts Town (1906) and Historic Homes of Amherst (1905), for instance, are widely referenced in contemporary scholarly and popular accounts of New England history and buildings. This seems to be Walker's earliest separate publication -- her first book -- as the next earliest I've found is dated to the twentieth century. The only copy of this item that I have been able to locate is the one in Jones Library of Amherst, Massachusetts, which was Walker's hometown at the time of publishing the poem. WorldCat and COPAC combined find no books by her earlier than 1900. The online CWMARS catalogue finds only one book earlier than 1900, that being a copy of this volume, Poem Read at the Twenty-Fifth Anniversary of the Massachusetts State Grange (1898), and that in only a single copy: the one at Jones Library, Amherst.
