[?Paris], Printed in the Year 1775. 8vo, pp. [xviii], 279 [280 blank]. With the 18th century autograph "W. Waring" on the title-page, and an early annotation by the author's initials, "Addenda to Ch/ iii. o. p. 4." 3 volumes, uniformly bound in early 18th century calf, gilt spines, red morocco labels; some chips to tops and bases of spine, but generally a very good and attractive, if made-up, set. With a steel-engraved bookplate by Perkins and Heath of a lion couchant guardant in a circle of ornaments surmounted by a crown (?marquess) and on top of a horse and knight in armour. Edward Stillingfleet (`1635 - 1699) seems to have had a gift for controversy. The first volume, by Canes, is a reply to Stillingfleet's polemical A Discourse Concerning the Idolatry Practiced in the Church of Rome (1671); the second, by Sergeant, to "Faith of Protestants Reduced to Principles" (title given in ESTC; not traced in Stilligfleet's separate works); and the third, by Warner, to Several Conferences Concerning the Idolatry of the Church of Rome (1679).
