FIRST EDITION. 4to, 288 x 225 mms., pp. [viii], 265 [266 blank], engraved (by Sherwin) portrait frontispiece (slightly off-setting on title-page), contemporary or slightly later half calf, marbled boards (rubbed and slightly soiled), gilt rules on spine, black leather label; lacking the final leaf of adverts, name "Middleton" rubber-stamped on title-page, front joint holding by cords, rear joint rubbed, corners a little worn. Published when Stuart was 36, Stuart's History was described in the Critical Review for March 1780 as resembling the histories of ancient writers, and his impartiality was praised. The Monthly Review for May, 1780 pronounced the work as the "clearest and most comprehensive, as well as the most entertaining performance that we have met with respecting this important branch of history."
