Small 8vo, 167 x 106 mms., pp. vii [viii blank], 235 [236 blank, 237 - 239 Contents, 240 directions to binder]; 277 [278 blank, 279 - 283 Contents, 284 Errata and directions to binder], engraved portrait frontispiece and three other engraved plates in volume 1, one engraved plate in volume 2 (lacking the frontispiece portrait of Lady Jane Grey), contemporary calf, morocco label on volume 2, missing on volume 1; many leaves at beginning and end of each volume affected by damp, particularly at margins, tops of spines chipped. A very modest set, with the inscription, "E. Clutterbuck/ from her Father, 1820" on the recto of the front free end-paper in each volume Keate (1729–1797) was trained as a lawyer and called to the bar in 1753, though he had already begun to publish poetry. He and Voltaire became close friends when Voltaire admired his poem, Ancient and Modern Rome (1760), which vindicated the religious impulse when it produced the art, sculpture, music, and architecture that he admired in Rome, while deploring Catholic superstition.
