Title: The Musical Magazine, or Compleat Pocket Companion For the Year 1767. Consisting of Songs and Airs for the German Flute, Violin, Guittar and Harpsichord. By the Most Eminent Hands. Volume I [II].
Description: [London], Sold by T. Bennett No. 61 Holborn and by W. Bingley, opposite Durham Yard in the Strand, n. d. [1767]. 2 volumes in 1. Large 8vo, 233 x 163 mms., pp. [ii], 156 [157 - 160 Index]; [ii], 160, including index in volume 2, engraved throughout, engraved title-pages with small engraved vignette of Handel at top of volume 1 and Lewis Granom in volume 2, index in volume 1 partially annotated in a contemporary hand, identifying composers and titles of songs, bound in 19th century half blue calf, marbled boards, gilt spine; 2 small early library stamps, front joint a little tender, but a very good copy with the curious bookplate of James Norton Dickons on the front paste-down end-paper. The Musical Magazine eventually ran to six volumes, though complete sets are uncommon. Lewis Granom (c. 1725 - c. 1791), whose portrait appears on the title-page to volume 2, is not, of course, as well-known as other composers represented in these volumes (Handel, Arne, Jackson of Exeter, etc.), but he had a successful career as composer and flautist and song-writer.
