Geoffrey Carnall in his book Robert Southey and his Age (1960) notes that this attempt to write the lives of the "heroes of our religion" produced an account that "was infected with heresy. In the course of the book he fell foul of several of the Thirty-Nine Articles. He sympathized with Pelagius, an d indirectly attacked St. Paul's teaching on faith. He seemed to think that Romanism would be an excellent religion if it were stripped of its ecclesiastical abuses, and if the popes were men like Fenelon."
