Large 8vo, pp. [xxviii], 439 [440 blank, 441 - 448 Contents]; [xii], 440 [441 - 465 Index, 466 - 468 blank], engraved portrait of Newton as frontispiece in volume 1, contemporary tree calf, small gilt border on covers, spines ornately gilt, black morocco labels; last gathering in volume 1 misbound, with Contents leaves interspersed with text but complete, spine a little rubbed. From the Easton Neston Library, with library label for shelf mark and the armorial bookplate of Sir Thomas Hesketh, Bart., Rufford Hall Lancashire on the front paste-down end-paper. Newton (1704 - 1782) began publishing this work in 1754, five years after his edition of Paradise Lost had appeared. The book was an immediate success and went into several editions in the 18th century and begat many successors.
